Professor Penelope Andrews is the John Marshall Harlan II Professor of Law and Director of the Racial Justice Project at 丝瓜APP. She is also the Immediate Past President of the Law and Society Association. Much of her scholarship has been undertaken through a comparative lens, with a heavy focus on South Africa, where she grew up. Professor Andrews is Dean Emerita both at the Albany Law School and University of Cape Town Faculty of Law. She has taught at various law school summer programs, including: the Columbia Law School program in Amsterdam; the University of Maryland Law School program in Aberdeen, Scotland; the Touro Law School program in Berlin, Germany; and the Valparaiso Law School program in Valparaiso, Chile, and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Professor Andrews also has substantial experience hosting American and foreign students and faculty at international conferences and workshops in South Africa and Australia.

Professor Kirk D. Burkhalter 鈥�04 is the Dean for Evening Division Engagement and Director of the 21st Century Policing Project at 丝瓜APP. He teaches criminal law and legal practice while also leading bar exam preparation programs and workshops focused on analytical and organizational skills. Before joining 丝瓜APP, he taught at Hofstra School of Law and John Jay College, and worked as a corporate securities attorney at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP. Earlier in his career, he spent 20 years with the NYPD, retiring as a First Grade Detective after conducting extensive investigations into organized crime and terrorism.

Professor is the former Dean at Golden Gate University School of Law. She speaks Italian fluently and has spent much time over many decades as a visiting scholar in Italy. Much of her scholarly research has been undertaken through a comparative lens focusing on Italy and the United States. She recently completed a Fulbright Fellowship in Rome. Built over decades, Professor Van Cleave has a substantial network of colleagues and other contacts within academic, legal, and non-governmental organization (NGO) communities in Italy. She has also taught in the Golden Gate Summer Program in Paris and other international programs for law students.

Professor Antonio Marchesi graduated with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in Law at the Sapienza University of Rome in 1985 and obtained his Ph.D. in Law at the European University Institute in 1991. Since 2005, he has been Associate Professor of International Law in the Law Department of the University of Teramo in Italy. He has also taught courses, inter alia, in the Department of Philosophy at the Sapienza University of Rome (2001鈥�2011), the American University of Rome (from 2016), and the Master鈥檚 Programs of the Italian Society of International Organization (SIOI) (from 2009). He is the author of over 50 essays, published in law journals and in collective volumes, and editor or author of several books.听He has also edited books and reports on behalf of NGOs and written comments published in periodicals and daily newspapers. Since 1977, Professor Marchesi has been an active member of the Italian section of Amnesty International, of which he was President from 1990 to 1994 and from 2013 to 2019. On behalf of Amnesty International鈥檚 International Secretariat, he has carried out research missions and trial observations and has been member of delegations to international conferences. He has been a consultant for the International Secretariat of Amnesty International, the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture, the European Parliament鈥檚 Special Rapporteur on the Death Penalty, the European Commission, and several NGOs. Professor Marchesi was also a member of the observatory on Italian prisons established by Antigone (2002鈥�2008), and Vice-President of the Ethical Committee on Sponsorships as appointed by the Mayor of Rome (2005鈥�2008). Since 2017, he has been a consultant for the National Guarantor of the Rights of Persons Deprived of their Personal Liberty (GNPL), which is the Italian National Preventive Mechanism under 鈥淥PCAT,鈥� the UN Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture.
